Since this is an organic mattress, it doesn’t have a waterproof barrier, so you do need a mattress protector. is that a problem that the natural mat mattress is slightly smaller in width than other mattresses? i understand it's 27 and 1/4. won't there be space on either size in cribs that are supposed to fit 28 width mattresses? thanks for your help

What a good question! To start, the Cocomat meets the CPSC standard requiring crib mattresses to be at least 27.25 inches by 51.75 inches.
For determining a safe fit within a standard full-size crib, the rule of thumb is no more than 2 adult fingers should be able to fit between the crib and mattress. Check out the width of two of your fingers; more than 3/4 of an inch, right? So while the wonderfully organic Cocomat is slightly smaller than the other crib mattresses that we carry, it is absolutely safe to use is any standard size crib!
