Are the red areas breathable?
Q: Hello, I'm very interested in this travel bed for a trip to NYC in a couple months; my son will be 6 months old by then. However, it worries me that the bottom red part of the bed isn't mesh, which makes me think it isn't breathable; I thought I had read that in order to prevent SIDS, babies should not have bumpers in their crib unless they are breathable / mesh. The red part seems like it would act the same way as a crib bumper... if my baby sleeps with his face against the red part (because he can roll now), isn't that considered unsafe? I guess I'm trying to figure out why the bottom red part ISN'T mesh also, but if you could answer my question about safety, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A: You’re right, the bottom isn’t mesh, but you shouldn’t worry about this bed’s safety for a couple of reasons. First of all, the sides aren’t like a bumper in that a) they’re made of lightweight polyester, rather than a thick cushion, and b) they’re angled in such a way that a baby can’t really bury his face against them. Also, since your baby can roll around, suffocation isn’t an issue as long as there are no loose items that could cover his face, because he would simply roll away from whatever’s blocking airflow. And, finally, since the top is mesh, it does allow for airflow in general so breathability isn’t an issue. I hope this helps reassure you about this bed; we love it and think you will, too!

Bug protection?
Q: The pictures make this look like the the bed is entirely enclosed when zipped. Is this true? Would it keep baby from rolling out and mosquitos, spiders, etc. from getting in? We will be vacationing in cabins this July, and our little one will be 6 months old. The mosquitos are TERRIBLE there, and a pack n play offers little protection. Would this bed be able to keep our baby bite-free as well as containing her in one spot?

A: Yes, the Peapod travel bed is perfect for what you’re looking for! It zips closed to keep your little one in and to keep bugs and insects out. It’s also great for outdoor use, offering protection from both UV rays and wind. Its screen panels allow you to check in on your baby and view him or her from all angles, so that everyone can rest easy!

OK for a 5-month old?
Q: We are expecting our son in late June 2010 and hope to travel to grandma's by plane for Thanksgiving 2010. We'd prefer not to buy a pack and play/travel crib because of the expense and hassle of transporting it by air, since we don't expect to make more than 1-3 overnight trips with our son per year where we'd need it. (We would likely be going to hotels where we could get a crib brought in, or to other visit family members in other cities with lots of grandchildren nearby, who have all the supplies.) We're hoping grandma can borrow a travel crib/pack and play from a friend near her since we don't think it makes sense for her to invest in one, either. But if not, can the peapod be used for a 5-month-old? Would we also need to use it with a sleep positioner to prevent him from rolling?

A: Yes, the Peapod is perfect for exactly what you need it for. It’s suitable from birth to 3 years, so you’ll get many years of use. Sleep positioners are a personal preference, but you’ll want to stop using them when your baby starts trying to roll over, which will happen around 3-4 months. If your son will be five months old during your trip, it sounds like you’d be past that stage already. I hope this helps!

Comfortable?
Q: We've used the Pack 'n' Play for trips with my 12 mo daughter and while she's a great sleeper at home, she doesn't seem to like to sleep in the Pack 'n' Play - I think it's too hard, because it helps to put towels under the sheet. Is this bed comfortable?

A: Absolutely! The amazing Peapod comes with an inflatable mattress which will help protect your baby from cold, damp floors while providing a very comfortable place to sleep. You'll find this air-filled mattress to be a tad softer than your previous mattress, but will still provide her with the support she needs. It even comes with a washable sleeping pad!

Another reason why you'll love the Peapod? No more heavy lifting! Weighing less than 6 pounds makes this Bed the perfect travel companion.
